This morning, with tiring eyes we entered the room. It was a bit cold, but the greeting of others warmed my heart up and I was no longer sleepy. Simple breakfast filled my hunger with great satisfaction. No surprise, everyone was happy and prepared to give today a good one. The music started, it was powerful, so powerful that even my passion began to grow within the music’s beat. We danced the space dance. The action bound everyone’s heart into one big group. That moment, we were not a team, but as one individual.
After that, James introduced a man’s moment of lifetime. Erik, he is a blind man who climbed up the Mount Everest. I was touched by his story. Although he was blind, but he used his own way to see the world. He used his feet and other senses to feel the world. He had his own Mount Everest different from others. While the leader asked him if he would like to climb the mountain, he said yes. Not just because he was blind and wants to prove he can, but also because his sight came back. His team became his eyes and led him all the way up to the top of the world.
After that, we had a short break after we went to Rice University. The weather was bad, like really bad. It was raining cats and dogs. Everyone’s shoes and clothes were wet. It was a tough road to the destination. We arrived at the university with exhaustion. We finished our meal fast and clean.
We all went into a classroom. Inside the classroom, there was this old man with kind smile stood at the right corner of the classroom. He was Dr. Tayfun. He briefly introduced himself and started his speech about the parachute. He spoke in a humorous way and not forget to add jokes here and there. I found it interesting to listen to him. He explained the confusing topic so easy and clear that even we as high school students can understand his words. At the end, we took pictures with him, and I asked him to help me sign his name on a poster of Rice University. This was a new experience to me and I appreciated this. Meanwhile, we had a project about Rice University. We were going to take shots from the campus and happen to make a short movie to briefly introduce Rice University. I had to say. It was hard to tell where to go as a visitor since the campus was unfamiliar to me and it was quite a big campus.
We finally found the school of social science after a long walk. We even met the associate dean of school of social sciences. She introduced the school of social science and gave our group a guidebook and a T-shirt. It was an exciting experience. We took our shots and went back to meet others. In addition, today is full of excitement, and we participated in every project. I would like to have a good rest tonight and be ready for tomorrow’s excitement.

1/24高階太空學校日誌-White Team Avien Wang 王紫兒
今天我們很榮幸得能夠經歷一場休士頓 難得一見的下雨天 可是惡劣的天氣始終沒有影響大家的好心情 乘著metro 步行數十分鐘後 抵達了Rice University 之後第一件事就是享用大家期待已久的午餐 很特別的是我們和其他大學生一樣 在學生餐廳用餐 讓人有融入環境的感覺 讓人覺得自己都不像觀光客了 以前出國旅遊 通常交通工具都是使用遊覽車 但我們使用的卻是大眾交通工具 享用美食的地點也和當地美國人一樣 感覺得出Hasse 的用心 努力讓我們了解當地人們的習慣和生活環境
在萊斯大學裡聽了博士的演講 雖然有些學術性的理論不太了解 不過也讓我們學習到 觀眾的態度 神情 和表現 其實會影響演講者的心情 洪亮的掌聲 熱情的歡呼 懶散的聽眾 消極的態度 會成就不一樣的演講者

短短幾句解說 大家居然能夠跑出這麼多有創意的想法 也就是我們今天早上的每日一句creativity 報告最重要的就是吸引觀眾 而能吸引光眾的方法就是含有豐富的創意 就像前幾天我們在公園玩的團康活動 大家絞盡腦汁 想著不同的 新奇的答案來解決一個再簡單不過的問題 讓我們增加了很多快樂的活動與體驗
Anyway在拍攝短片的途中 大家因負責不同的報告區域 所以分頭進行 但後來卻發生了突發狀況 大家迷路了 也走散了 大家的第一個反應 不約而同的剛好就是回到集合地點 這突發狀況反映了大家的機智反應 回到飯店後 是我第一次在西方國家 吃到米飯 讓人感到很怪異 因為我們在台灣吃的中國菜是很清淡的 但第一次吃到這麼油膩 這麼鹹的中國菜 讓人感到很不適 但這也讓我了解到 要入境隨俗 人需要為環境而改變 而不是環境應人而改變

今天一大早抵達了休士頓，大家睡眼惺忪的下了飛機搭上了早班的巴士，天還未亮，大家因為時差的關係，讓整個團隊顯得懶懶散散。我們在巴士上休息，任由巴士載我們到飯店休息，但是因為飯店制度和一些作業上的問題，我們必須等待check in的時間。
在check in之前，我們待在我們未來七天的教室，也就是在飯店裡上課，這可是新鮮一事呢！從來沒想過在飯店裡上課。Joe解說了休士頓：休士頓為全美第四大城市，然而也是在德州第一大城，他們曾被許多國家統治占領過，所以造成他們的宗教複雜。至於天氣，他們一年平均只有18天會下雪，然而現在的天氣正好跟台灣的氣溫相似，只是相對來說乾燥了點。多麼美好的一天，一大清早學習，正式記憶力最好的時光，能夠了解這麼多的知識還真是有這個榮幸呢！雖然知道今天會是很累的一天，我們也還沒能check in進房間稍微休息一下，將近一天沒洗澡，這是個不錯的體驗，但倒是滿折磨人的！一想到我們下午的行程，感覺腳就開始酸了，雖然在飛機上也坐得很久。美術館呀~很想去，但不知道會不會有耐心好好欣賞一幅名畫！
然而時間匆匆，下午的來臨，搭上他們方便的交通工具－電車，前往Museum of Fine Art，光是欣賞他們的建築就夠驚歎了，室內的空間設計，連接不同大樓的”光之隧道”。上百幅的名畫擺設在這美麗的美術館內，由於時間的關係，我們的解說小姐挑了幾幅比較具有代表性的畫，為我們講解。看著這個眾多的畫，很想留下好好欣賞一翻，這麼多的名畫，卻沒有時間品嘗，真是可惜。當然，能欣賞具代表性的幾幅畫，今天的行程也不會白熬，美好的一天，總算畫下個句點。希望明天在休士頓牧場能夠拿出原有的精神，好好的體驗在牧場上的快樂。
在組別當中我是最年長的，希望與組員不要產生代溝，相信我們RED TEAM的團結與默契，一定能讓這趟旅程添加更多的色彩。最後，我想感謝今天辛苦的老師們，陪著我們過完這辛苦又煎熬的第一天。

經過了兩天惱人的過關安檢等等繁瑣的程序,終於到了 The Land of Freedom, 看著路上得各色人種我心想,真的是一個 Mass Culture 的國家。
第一天到達 Crowne Plaza 心裡想著的是 “喔 我的床 喔 我的電視 喔 睡覺“,沒想到HASSE為了我們,想要呈現給我們完整Houston所以馬上揪團出發去了Contemporary Art Museum。現場導覽Lauren帶我們大概逛了逛一些European Art, from ancient to modern art. 她提出的許多問題其實都很值得我們去思考,甚至一些想法,一些方法去吸收新知識。在導覽的過程中,Lauren告訴我們 Don't look at the label, look at the art and then think about it, why is it beautiful and what is your definition of beauty. Lauren點出了我的毛病,這或許也是大部份人的毛病,看了一件精美的藝術品,看了看簡介,了解了材料跟原本作用然後就走了,抱著走馬看花的態度走走停停,這樣其實並不能完整的去欣賞一件作品。這也許是今天最大也是唯一的重要收穫。
說實在的,我並不知道明天要去哪裡要幹嘛,但是或許這樣才能讓我有精神去玩,因為一切都是Unknown。明天最大的目標當然就是……可以先告訴我要去哪嗎?決定態度之前得要知道要去哪裡才能準備齊全還有拿出適當的態度吧。再來其實我還滿希望大家可以多多表達自己的意見,如果真的反對就提出來吧,因為其實我看過很多種學生,發現台灣學生最擅長就是隱藏自己的情緒,這樣也許好,可是要適當的表達啊!不用支持我,我只希望我的小隊能跟我有良好的互動,當然其他同學也是,畢竟大家出來就是有緣嘛。我希望我能帶給我團隊活力跟精神,這比給我們課本好多了,還可以鼓勵大家呢,有精神才能吸收嘛!

馬雅日誌:South-Nohol-Yellow 柳柏如 Brenda
今天是我們第一天的program，不過一整天的時間幾乎都是在飛機上。
噗噗～在Los Angeles轉機時，超開心的….但是不能在那裡晃真是掃興，我還想說終於可以看看Los Angeles有多麼吸引人了，畢竟那裡是傳說中的聖地（逛街聖地）。等待的多時的飛機，終於可以登機了，耶～Houston就要在眼前了，好感動唷！！果然“不經一番寒徹骨，焉得梅花撲鼻香”，不是概的，也就是說經過長途的旅程終於到達目的地。也相信大家的屁股一定酸透了…
到達飯店時，由於時間還太早，導致我們無法check in。大家也只好撐著身體，進到教室聽著解說。解說老師叫做Joe，他為我們介紹Houston的特徵與歷史。Houston是：全美第四大城市，也是Texas第一大城，還有商業大城，最重要的是…NASA（太空總署）。能源的工廠規劃，使得Houston的發展更是更上一層樓，並迅速的尾追Chicago的發展。還有Texas本是由6個國家統治，因此聚集了許多不同的人種，所以也比較會接納他國的人。
接著坐著電車去博物館參觀，這應該算是我第一次在國外參觀美術的博物館。裡面的作品都很引人注目，但是我最想看的“梵谷展”是在2/20才開放，我的期望落空了…藝術品真的是會令人讚不絕口，並且增加創造力。
回到飯店時，大家都精疲力竭了，因此老師讓我們回房休息。晚餐時間是吃Pizza，邊吃邊看“High School Music ”，因為我們在Houston的某一天要去百老匯。而且聽說我們也要表演～
我今天最大的收穫是：對藝術的觀點與使用，發覺到更深層的意義。創造力是無限的。我明天最大的突破是可以對趕牛更有興趣。我要感謝這次陪伴我來的朋友們。
MAYA~We are coming! 馬雅探索出發~
This is Frankie, updating you from LAX. It is 9:20pm local time, which is 1:20pm on Tuesday, 1/25 Taipei time. We are waiting for our connecting flight to Houston. It is now free time for the kids, their favorite time thus far. For me as well...because free time means rest time for Rebecca and myself.
To summarize, we left Taoyuan airport smoothly without too much trouble. The boarding process was easy enough because Rebecca had everything under control and we didn't lose anybody. I ended up sitting away from the kids because one of the seats was away and Rebecca wanted all the kids to be together.
When we landed in LA, things got interesting. My favorite number is now 18 and my favorite thing to do is counting. Do we have 18 kids, are there 18 pieces of luggage, and are there 18 piles of stuff...where is that 18th child running around with the green polo shirt? Ahahaha!
Through immigration, Rebecca took the kids with Taiwanese passports while I took Angela and William with US passport. We went through fairly quickly, trying to avoid the mean looking immigration officers. We then proceeded to carousel number 1 for our luggage. We personally picked up 19 suitcases. William and Angela were really helpful! I also had my workout for the day!
After that, I went to switch places with Rebecca and waited for the remaining kids to come through. We all met up by the our luggage, and proceeded to custom and then moving onto connecting flight.
We had to walk outside the airport to domestic connecting flight because I needed to have my boarding pass printed out. The evening air of LA was exactly the way I remembered it...crisp, fresh, and full of nostalgia. The temperature was perfect for a breezy after-dinner walk...
We went through security point again, and the most exciting part was when we had the front seat to a security drill. I was quite excited, and so were the kids. We stared in awe as the guards told random passengers to freeze. That was cool~ I told the kids we were going to be on TV~ hahaha!
We will be boarding our flight in about 2 hours. Now, the kids are relaxing and roaming around the airport. Their laughter soothes me because I know that they're enjoying themselves. Listening to them chatting away relaxes me because I know this will an experience they will remember.

1/23高階太空學校日誌-Blue Team-Lucy Chu初郁葶
Today is the first official day of the HASSE program. Long hours of plane flight finally took us here. We arrived at Houston, Texas. I enjoyed our way here although it was very tiring. We got to know each other and very quickly went ahead to discuss our team project. During the discussion I found out what my teammates are good at. Each of them has something for us to learn. I truly believe that I would learn how to communicate better and work with others better. After the program I might be able to work better in a group instead of doing all the work individually.
I learned a lot from the presentation technique lesson given by Teacher Ronald. The skills we learned from the lesson would benefit us every time when we are giving a presentation or delivering public speech. I know by heart that it is very important for us to possess the ability to express ourselves clearly. Also, deliver a persuading speech is also a way to make what you say influential. President Obama won him millions of votes by his influential speech delivered before the election. I have read a book about Obama, Martin Luther King and some other celebrities’ speeches. They all delivered strong speeches and those speeches brought them the desirable results. There will be lots of speaking practices during the HASSE space school program and I think that it is a good chance for everyone of us to participate and get involved to prepare ourselves in our future career in any areas.
In the afternoon we went to the park and played team games to build up our team’s coherence. We need to apply our creativity and we also need to work together as a team in order to win the competition. The same idea can also be used in our life. We can never succeed by ourselves. “On heroes’ wings we fly.” Sometimes we need to build on upon others’ achievements and sometimes we need to cooperate with others to accomplish a task. I’m looking forward to the rest of our days in Houston.
Today is only a start. There are still many challenges waiting for me ahead. The tasks may be hard but I have confidence and faith that I will be able to handle it if I do my best and never give up.
There’s a quote I like that I heard today, “It is difficult to say that something is impossible.” I would always remind myself to dream big and never consider anything as impossible. Everything is possible. I’m very lucky to have the chance to join this space school during my winter break. I believe that this would definitely be a memorable experience and also “a chance in a life time.” Let’s work for our goals!
